Next steps in tackling Anti-Blackness and white supremacy.

As a cultural worker with over 10 years of experience, there is advice I would offer persons new to the landscape of anti-racism and cultural work. Tackling and dismantling racist practices in a workplace is almost entirely about infrastructure and culture and is difficult, if not impossible, to meet in a reactionary manner. Think of it as being sick. If we find ourselves sick, we are not instantly considered healthy by taking lots of NyQuil. NyQuil or any medicine taken, is typically the go-to, once we have the worst of our symptoms. Instead, when we first feel a tickle in our throat, it serves us if we immediately increase our Vitamin C and drink lots of water. Then we know we are less likely to have that tickle grow into a cold or worse.

Moreover, if we commit to not getting sick by sustaining the healthiest of diets and habits, that tickle never happens. Developing an anti-racist culture at works is about systems that ensure a healthy culture. If we are late on responding, we find ourselves in a position where we move in a spirit of almost desperation to get rid of the inconvenience and not care exactly how we do it, as long as it gets done. Many employers and corporations are dowsing their organizations and companies in NyQuil, hoping the symptoms go away and make them feel okay during this time. I am not NyQuil.
